5 Health Trends to Add to Your Pantry Now

Health Trends

January is always the time to explore a healthier diet, evaluate your plans for the future, and reflect on the positive changes you have made already. I was making dinner the other night and couldn’t help notice a few new things in my pantry that were not in my pantry 6 months ago, but I seriously couldn’t live without ‘em now. I thought I’d share some of these health trends I believe are soo worth jumping on the bandwagon for. I threw in some fun articles and recipes for ya too!

1.  Coconut Oil

But Why?

Coconut is great for your skin and hair. It can also reduce the risk of heart disease. Coconut oil is a great substitute for butter in most recipes even rice krispie treats! You can make natural body scrubs with it or put it in your hair instead of conditioner. Many conditioners found in stores have been known to cause breakouts on the upper back. Coconut oil is not as heavy as conditioner and can help hair growth and lock in shine.

2. Turmeric

Tumeric

BUt WHy?

Turmeric is an antioxidant that can reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, plus it’s affordable and you can cook almost anything with it! I like to add it stir-fry or my favorite tofu ramen dish. Target carries it organically so make sure to put it on your next shopping list!

3. Himalayan Salt

Himalayan Salt

But Why?

Himalayan Salt can be used to increase bone strength, reduce the signs of aging, cure middle ear infections naturally. You can also boil the salt with water, place it in a hot mug to breath in the steam to help fight a cold.

4. Bragg’s Cider Vinegar

But WHy?

Apple Cider Vinegar can help acne and unclog pores! It’s also a great immune booster during flu season. It can also be used to naturally cure headaches. I take this everyday just for health reasons, I’ve taken a liking to the taste. I’ve noticed it also gives me an energy boost in the afternoon without the jitters caused by coffee. You could also take it to lower cholesterol and it has been said to fight certain types of cancers. Definitely add this to the list!

5. Turbinado Sugar

Turbinado SugarBut…But Why??

My two weaknesses? Coffee and baking. So it’s no surprise that I like to use Turbinado sugar instead of white sugar. This way, I feel less guilty sweetening my coffee in the morning. However, there’s not much of a huge differences between regular and Turbinado sugar, but when it comes to calories, you’re better off with Turbinado. In all honesty, I like the flavor of it better anyway so why not use it?  I’m still experimenting baking with it and I haven’t quite mastered it yet, but when I do, I promise to blog about some good baking recipes with Turbinado sugar.

Happy Holidays

Christmas is right around the corner. The weather is really throwing me off! It’s been so hard to listen to Frank Sinatra’s Christmas in my car when it’s not even snowing. Then I watched White Christmas the other night and it just wasn’t the same. Watching Elf with my little sister was a lot of fun though. I’m not exactly sure if it was appropriate for her age, but she loved it! She got to wear her monkey drinking hot cocoa pajamas while drinking hot cocoa out of my favorite London coffee mug.  Spending time with my family is my favorite part of the holidays, but seriously…where is the snow!?

I noticed this week was quite hectic for me. I finally dabbled in some Christmas shopping and caught up with my grandparents yesterday over chinese food. Before I knew it, it was Friday!!

I wanted to give everyone heads up that I’m taking a break from posting featured artists until January. I still have Part 2 of New York to share with you also! I’ll be taking this time to catch up with my friends and draft some awesome posts for 2013.

Have a wonderful holiday, good luck with all your Christmas shopping, have fun spending time with family & friends.  See you in 2013!

Metaphorical Brick

Here’s an excerpt from a short story I’m currently working on. Sometimes I fall in love with a word, a sentence, or even a paragraph. I really found this paragraph close to my heart. I’m sure it needs some finishing touches, but I had a sudden urge to share it with you. Enjoy.

Metaphorical Brick, Shannon Callarman, 2012 (excerpt of a short story):

“No one ever told me what it would be like when a man looks at you like a woman instead of a young, naïve girl. I had gone years thinking that a certain ethereal emotion is spoiled – numb to feeling it ever again. Yet, just when I thought I had already experienced every good feeling that relates to romance – a higher level of ecstasy without the use of a white little pill or a shot of whiskey, it hit me. Romance is still alive and possible in my mid 20s. It was time to enjoy the pleasures of falling again. I knew at that moment, I had no choice but to place a double lock on my past, fears, and worries before I suddenly blink and miss it. After all, he was holding my metaphorical heavy brick in his arms. Soon enough he’d have to return it back to me, and I’d be forced to carry it on my tired shoulders once again.”

Fashion is Art :: Robert Kalloch’s Designs in 1938′s Holiday

The clip Hepburn is wearing was actually custom designed by Paul Flato. It was his first big break into the Hollywood industry.

I don’t care what anyone says, Fashion is art. I wish I would have taken a class about the history of Fashion when I was still in college. Maybe in the future I will, but in the meantime, I’ll continue to watch my favorite classic films and critique the fashion myself. Last weekend, I spent my Saturday night with my grandma. We ordered carry out and watched 1938′s Holiday starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. Other than the dramatic acting and Cary Grant’s wonderful sense of humor, we both got on the discussion about fashion. The costumes were designed by Robert Kalloch who also designed for The Awful Truth and His Girl Friday.

Cary Grant & Doris Nolan. What a funky hat and you can’t forget the pearls!

The Party Scene. I love how Doris Nolan’s dress shimmered as she walked. It is extremely stunning. The top almost looks like a big bow.

Isn’t it funny how some of these designs are coming back in fashion? The white blouse that Hepburn is wearing is something you can easily find in H&M. Lets not get on discussion about Grant’s bow tie…

Piccadilly Line

IMG_0008

As Ryann sat on the crowded Piccadilly line towards Heathrow Airport, passing Earls Court, Hamersmith, and Hatton Cross, she fell deep into her thoughts. She closed her eyes and breathed slowly, trying to bury her anxiety, but it was no use. She thought about the last 5 years and how she managed to be the victim of her own life.

She was only 19 when she left Oak Park, Illinois to live a delusional life in London.

In 2007, there was an accident that occurred 10 miles from downtown Oak Park that took over Chicago’s morning news. The accident had left Ryann in a traumatic state full of guilt and confusion. Over the years, she had tried so hard to brainwash herself into thinking it had never happened. It was no use, the streets of Oak Park screamed his name and every person she knew reminded her of what happened:

“Don’t you feel guilty that you lived and he survived?”

“I can’t believe you practically killed him, Ryann B.”

“If you weren’t cheating on him, he wouldn’t have been so hostile.”

5 years ago, she was on the same train line heading towards London. This time she was retracing her steps back to reality.

ArtStack: My New Social Media Obsession

ArtStack

This morning marks a day in my social media history, I was invited to join ArtStack. Just when I thought I was saved from the Pinterest volcano that I thought would interrupt my busy, productive life, I’m not officially obsessed with ArtStack. I still love Pinterest, but as the months went on, I realized that if I saw another meme appear on my screen, I might scream! Pinterest is great for planning parties or my Fall 2012 wardrobe, but when it come to finding talented artists and great artwork, it falls short…very short.

Then ArtStack came along and now I’m a “stacker” (well only 2 hours in the making). Instead of pinning, I can now “stack” amazing pieces of artwork, follow emerging and well-known artists, and create collections rather than boards.

My first collection is going to be all about the neXt program. With a very busy weekend and week coming up (artists drop off, curate, installing, opening reception….) not to mention a family reunion on Saturday in which I promised to make cupcakes, this isn’t very good timing to be a newcomer to stacking, but none of the less, I’m excited to be on it!

Are you on ArtStack? Follow me! If you’re an artists, I’d love to see your work. It’s sort of nice to be the first one out of all my Facebook friends that has come across such a fabulous social media site!

neXt gallery: “Before” Pics

neXtgalleryBeforePics

I stopped by the vacant mall the other day to take some pics of the old Express Store. The old Express is going to be transformed into the neXt gallery exhibit featuring established and emerging artists.

I thought I could just peak in and take pictures through the windows, but I found that the windows were covered and there was no way I could see in. I had to search down a security guard, but he opened the doors and turned on the lights for me. I was able to walk around and take as many pics as I liked!

The space looks great! It’s perfect for a gallery. I can’t wait to get things started. It’s been a lot of fun seeing the emerging artists submissions. I’m so motivated to plan this event, can you tell? It’s 10:30 pm on a Monday night and I’m posting “before” pics.

More coming soon! P.S. I watched Gallery Girls tonight. Oh yes, I will DEFINITELY be writing a post all about those caddy girls!

Several Starry Nights: Character Breakdown

4953f3943b3a11e180c9123138016265_7

I’ve been doing a lot of editing lately and making a lot of changes. I went through a little bit of a writer’s block for a few weeks, but I’m back on track! I’m feeling confident about where my book is going and the all around theme. I was talking with a friend the other day and telling her about all the characters in detail. I had a lot of fun listing my characters and describing them as if I knew them.

The first thing I did before writing my book was character development. I typed a character template that list all the attributes and personality traits of my characters. I even listed what their favorite ice cream would be (you never know when you’ll need a detail like this!) I believe character’s that are carefully constructed is the key to a good book. I want the reader to fall in love (or fall into hate) with my characters. I want a reader to always remember my characters months after finishing the book.

I decided to list out the main characters so you can get to know them before the book is done! I have a few supporting character, but I’ll leave them to talk about for another day.

Main Characters

Ryann: A 23-year-old free spirit. She has golden blond, curly hair and a petite figure. She’s been a painter since she was a child. Ryann has an edgy style and is very much influenced by the London fashion world. She grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, but after a traumatic episode a year before high school ends, she decides to take her grandmother’s inheritance and buy a one way ticket to London at age 19. When she arrives, she feels she will become the next great artist. She starts dating an upcoming celebrity DJ, Logan De Witt, who she feels will take her places. But eventually, Logan and Ryann get caught up in a lifestyle of drugs and alcohol and eventually things go down a dark path. After 5 years of living in London, Ryann starts to realize that she may have chosen the wrong path and she may need to take a few steps back in order to move forward again.

Dufficy: A 28-year-old lonely, flamboyant Irish boy who is still suffering from the loss of his mother at age 10. After his mother passes away after being ill during most of his childhood, Dufficy’s American father moves them to Chicago, away from Dufficy’s homeland. Dufficy faces a lot of challenges growing up such as not fitting in with the other guys, being from a different country, and eventually dealing with his alcoholic, abusive father. Being an only child and not having his mother any more, Dufficy still feels loyalty towards his father, despite his father’s abusive behavior. Dufficy has a hard time leaving his father, but spends most of his time hiding from him by crashing in the run down studio above the pub where he bartends.

Jolene: Ryann’s childhood friend who attended University of Chicago and became a Journalist right out of college, despite the economic hardships. School came easy for Jolene. She was always the type of girl who could go out all night and still ace her test the next morning. Not only does she have brains, but she’s also a beauty. With her long black silky hair and bright blue eyes, she attracts any man in the room. Unfortunately, after college, despite her beauty and brains, reality hits her quick and she realizes that life is starting to really kick her ass. She falls into depression because of her job, even though millions of other girls her age would kill for her position. She continues to sleep around, drink, and smoke. With this type of behavior, she may find herself losing it all.

Phil: Dufficy’s “older man”. This is definitely one of my favorite character’s that I’ve constructed, but one of the hardest. A 30-something rich, successful, educated, well dressed man who takes Dufficy under his wing. Phil is bald, but with striking blue eyes and fantastic bone structure. He loves the finer things in life such as his penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan and his Burberry scarf. He works for a big advertising agency in the heart of the city. Despite his expensive lifestyle, he still finds his way back to Dufficy who he feels “needs him”. Phil is the comedy relief, the one that breaks the ice and tells witty jokes.

The World Fascinates Me

andy-warhol-the-world.jpg?w=400&h=400

I’ve been told PLENTY of times that I have the worse ADD ever. Let me tell you, it becomes a huge problem when I’m typing away at my book. I often feel like I’m too inspired. I find myself trying to jam so many ideas into my book that the theme ends up disappearing and I’m left with too much “noise”. What I mean by noise is there’s just too much useless stuff going on. So when I’m reading through past chapters, I start to give myself a headache. So lately, I’ve been trying to eliminate the “fat”. Even certain characters that I developed don’t need to be studied as much as my two main characters.

My one character, Jolene, is a childhood friend of Ryann (my female main character). Jolene is supposed to be the sidekick, the one person Ryann has to come home to. However, this is Ryann’s story. In the beginning I really put a big emphasis on Jolene when I first introduce her (family, her job, her interest) thinking it would be important information, but it’s not. All you need to know about Jolene is she smokes a bunch of pot, writes for a local magazine and is very loyal to Ryann…the end! As much as I hate to do this, I had to cut out a lot out about her. I felt that if I went too far into Jolene’s life she would A) disappear later in the book and B) overshadow Ryann’s character.

Working out these kinks is the hard part of writing a book. Of course no one said it would be easy. When I’m finished with it, who knows where it will take me. This may be my only chance to write a really really good story.

The Visualist

21532904438634925_ldpmChDI_c

(The above image is artist, Robert Montogomery, who is based out of London. I love his work because his poems relate to modern day society.)

I’ve always been a “visualist”. Even when it came to learning, I’d remember things easier if I looked at a PowerPoint, pictures, or even graphs. I think that’s why studying Art History came easy (sort-of) to me. If I read about an artist and I looked at his/her work simultaneously, I’d see the painting later and right away I would know who painted it. However, I’ve never been able to express myself creatively more so than with writing. It’s easy for me to describe something in my head rather than to draw it out.

One of my character’s gets caught in the rain during the beginning of her trip back home from London to Chicago. A navi taxi driver helps her get to Heathrow Airport, even though she doesn’t have any money.

With that said, one of the ways that help me write better is through visuals. I use visuals to help display more detail into my writing whether I’m trying to set a scene or describe what a character is wearing. For example, I love Pinterest as much as an Interior Designer or a painter does! I even have my own mood board in my room that is related to things that inspire my book. I flip through clothes magazines to find outfits that my characters would hypothetically wear. Any time I see something that makes me think, “omg this should totally be in my book!” I grab onto it.

I also keep a notebook, like many writers do, with notes pertaining anything from something funny I heard, quotes from people that I know, or scenarios I usually draw out in my head. I keep it by my bed because most of the time, I think about the best ideas when I’m practically asleep at 1 a.m. because that’s when my mind is 100% relaxed. But visuals are my number one source. My book is about the present time (just a year or so behind), so I think it’s important to keep a good eye on the world around me. I want my book to really describe this era and visuals really help this become possible.
Check out my Pinterest board, Novel Inspiration, to glance at some images that have inspired my book.
